The Forgotten Women of History: Where’s Their Movie?

March is here, which means two things:

  1. Brands will drop their one day of “girl power” marketing before going right back to underpaying women.

  2. We’re about to get mad about history—and we’re bringing receipts.

In this episode of The Scaries, we’re diving into why women’s contributions keep getting erased, why Hollywood loves a tortured male genius but ignores female pioneers, and why we need to rewrite the record—loudly and often.

The History They Didn’t Teach Us in School

Somehow, Steve Jobs has three movies, but we don’t have a single big-budget film about the women who invented WiFi, GPS, or even Monopoly. Make it make sense.

It’s not just Hollywood, though—women’s achievements have been systematically ignored, downplayed, or straight-up credited to men (shoutout to the Matilda Effect).

Why This Still Matters

When we erase women from history, it impacts who gets hired, promoted, funded, and taken seriously today:

  • More male CEOs are named John than there are female CEOs, period.

  • Only 30% of elected officials globally are women.

  • Women direct less than 20% of major studio films.

If you’ve ever wondered why fewer girls go into STEM, maybe it’s because they never see themselves in history.

Women don’t need another empty “Girl Power” Instagram post. We need real opportunities.
